  • John Cage: Reinvention
John Cage was one of the biggest influences in modern music, combining philosophical views with the art of music and sounds. He introduced the idea that all sounds were music, showing an immense amount of curiosity in ordinary noises, such as traffic or common household items. His life as a composer did not stem far away from his father’s profession, who spent his life as an inventor and engineer. The process of inventing came through in John Cage’s work, particularly in his prepared piano, an altered piano with objects placed in between its wires. Cage not only reinvented instruments, but the very definition of music itself. Reinvention, is about John Cage’s unsatisfied appetite to push boundaries and avoid what has already been accomplished. “I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas,” said Cage, “I’m frightened of the old ones.”
